If the brides were eaten then how did they know that there was any truth to this narrative that the creature was better than any man?

Me, I’d suspect some of the less reverent / more curious islanders of hanging around and diving down to get an eyeful of what actually happened to the sacrifices, then carrying tales back to the community.
That too strikes me as possible.
