What the Nazis did come up with was methamphetamine. They called it Pervitin. Yup, the WW2 German army was a bunch of meth heads. A ‘milder’ version, dextroamphetamine, AKA Dexys, is still prescribed as a stimulant and has been used by the militaries of various countries.
And if you didn’t already know, that’s where the band Dexys Midnight Runners got its name, a reference to using dextroamphetamine to stay up partying all night.
I’ve heard of Pervitin. Anthony Beevor in his history of the second world war mentions it being given to Panzer crews fighting at the Battle of Kursk, noting that it had the effect of dulling their senses of danger in addition to keeping them awake.
