This illustration was researched by Bacchus at ErosBlog as part of the Γ research commission. The original results were published at Hedonix as Γ 002 – Robotic Tan Lines Inspector. Here is what Bacchus found:
This image is one of those widespread internet images that is extremely difficult to source. The oldest web pages currently displaying the image are dated (like this one) to 2009, but the sourcing there indicates it was on at least one no-longer-extant Tumblr blog earlier than that. Subsequently it has been all over, from French biker forums to LiveJournal. All copies on the internet appear to be versions or crops from the same 324×551 pixel image. About the only hint at provenance I can determine comes from the image itself, which on close inspection reveals that the robot has non-Roman lettering on its chest:
At least one cameraman can be seen in the background, suggesting that this may be an image from an arranged publicity event.
A commenter at Hedonix had something interesting to add:
Your mistake was thinking that was non-Euro script. In fact, the image is flipped. I unflipped it and found it said “AROK”, then I searched Google Images for it. I found it here: http://cyberneticzoo.com/robots/1975-arok-ben-skora-american/ The link says that it is Miss Nude World 1975, which a Google search said was Stormy Shea (Cynthia Johns)…but a confirmed image was not to be found under either name.
Quite a lot of information on one small image!
I saw that pic in a Playboy Magazine from the stack my father owned that I used to sneak peaks at back in the late 1970s, early 80s (but I can’t remember how old the magazine itself was). I think it was from one of their “Year in Sex” pictorials. I also remember their was a pose of the robot with the nude girl being carried in the robot’s arms like he had picked her up one arm under her knees and one arm behind her back. I remember this because the smiling woman who seemed to be enjoying it spurned a silly young adolescent fantasy in my head of having a remote controlled robot that I could send out on the beached and he’d find and carry back to me pretty naked women who were happy to be brought back to me. I also remember that robot was featured in a kids magazine from my elementary school as well, I think it may have been Ranger Rick. I remember specifically that the creator said he had used a Halloween Frankenstein Mask for the face and enjoyed using the robot to answer the door for trick or treaters each year. I hope that can be of help.
Looking at the image when mirrored, the ‘non-Roman’ lettering looks like ITROK, or OTROK, or JTROK, or UTROK, to me.
