Aloysius Kim and his mad-science friends go to ground, taking refuge in the labyrinthine corridors of an abandoned insane asylum on the outskirts of Pleasant Prairie. Jireen nurses Cleo, who seems to be suffering from some strange and undiagnosable illness. The friends reckon their chances poor of holding out against Colonel Madder and his extensive government forces, and so resolve to try to reach Professor Joseph Corwin in his remote exile and plead for his help. Meanwhile, half a world away, abducted freshman Marie Martin is decanted from her weird confinement only to find herself in the clutches of the dreaded international businesswoman and slavemistress Helga Kupler.
