In a midwestern city some distance from Gnosis College, Kat Carter lives a life of vivid erotic fantasy, sometimes augmented by virtual reality systems. As part of an experiment Kat undergoes a procedure designed by a Dr. Hong to create a simulation of Kat’s brain inside a great nest of servers — the security of which is, unfortunately, compromised by a too-eager computer gamer. Sometime later, a trio unusual Gnosis College students, Elizabeth, John, and Viz are planning a hack of their own, into the popular virtual reality game called Munkytown, a hack which seems likely to have unusual and unpredictable consequences, especially given Viz’s own rather eccentric taste in entertainment…
