Nathan Stillie (aka Ndstillie) came up with this fantastic concept, and I executed it, figuring it would make a perfect third submission to the Loves Comics Contest, this one being a parody of the super hero genre of comic, featuring captain obvious, and his obvious ways of pointing out… well, the obvious. Obviously. For a long time I’ve believed comics would make awesome shirts, and am glad to participate in the loves competition. Hope you guys like it!

The originating Tumblr post in this image’s chain of Tumblr provenances credits this artwork to El Gato Gomez, and the signature confirms: “Gomez ’14”. El Gato Gomez is an artist from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (according to a blog interview here) whose name comes from the signature cat (Gomez) who appears in many of her works. My personal obsession with Mid Century style began very early. As a child I would sit for hours browsing through a small collection of personal treasures my mother had kept from her own childhood. She had a fabulous stash of photo albums, children’s books, and toys that were kept in a closet. I was especially enthralled with a 1960s Disneyland souvenir photo album. The images of Tomorrowland blew my tiny brain into space and the Mary Blair designed Small World dioramas tickled me to pieces. I had never seen anything so enchanting. Visions of the Haunted Mansion and my mother’s recollection of whirling, transparent ghosts and stretching portraits thrilled me completely. My first visit to a Disney park came shortly after Epcot Center opened and I was not disappointed. My most recent trip with my own child only reinforced the awe.
Another great influence was my grandmother whose house lay directly on a graveyard. I visited often on weekends and every Saturday we would watch the classic horror movies on “Creature Feature”. A passion for the macabre in black and white never left me and vintage horror movies and retro TV became part of DNA. Ask my kids — it’s hereditary.

This trippy animation was constructed (.gif creator is not known) from an artwork by artist Kelly Keith, who titled it simply Fay 001 on Flickr:
The reference is to actress Fay Wray, most famous for her starring role in the 1933 movie King Kong. Artist Kelly Keith makes the reference more explicit in this web gallery, where the piece is titled (or perhaps captioned) “The Universe Has the Right to Fay. Acrylic on panel.”)
Visually, the image of Fay is almost certainly collaged-in from a photograph or promotional art from King Kong. Although the precise source image could not be found, the costume and pose are similar to this from the movie, photograph credited to Ernest A. Bachrach:
Artist Kelly Keith was interviewed here, and credits “imagery from children’s books” along with “Eric Fischl, Wayne Thiebaud, Alice Neel, and old science-fiction magazines and paperbacks” for her artistic inspirations.

The blog post here displays a still capture of this scene and suggests that the animation is from the September 30, 2010 episode (Accounting For Lawyers) of the NBC television show Community. The actress is Alison Brie.
A similar animation (found here) of what appears to be very nearly the same scene is captioned “I am the smartest one in this whole group and all I’ve been used for is bait and distraction.”

Because of a post at ErosBlog I recognized this image as a page (page 34 as can seen in the scan lower right) from the English-language version of The Survivor by French comic artist Paul Gillon. There were at least three more books of The Survivor after this first one. (#2 #3 #4)

This photograph appeared in L’Officiel de la Couture et de la Mode de Paris, a French fashion magazine that has been published since 1921 and still exists both in print and on the web. What looks to be a complete web archive of the magazine may be found here.
The photograph appeared on page 84 of issue number 573-574 in 1969. A single word (perhaps Guégan) appears upper left, potentially both a name and a photographer credit.
In 2012 a design blog posted a thumbnail crop of this image as part of a photomosiac titled Space Mod: A Voyage Into 60s Intergalactic Fashion. The mosaic includes numerous similar fashion images evoking whimsical space clothing and gear.
The issue of L’Officiel where this photo appeared is quite remarkably space-happy for a fashion magazine, even in 1969, featuring as it does transparent bubbles invoking space helmets on at least half a dozen pages, plus the cover, which is shown here:
