Poll: Slider or long page for comics?

Note: this post will stay on top of this main page for a while, but please be assured that all the usual content is still running in posts below.

As time goes by we have more and more comics here at Erotic Mad Science, and I’ve been thinking about ways to publish them that are easier to use and more appealing to look at. I’ve traditionally published comics here on a long page, that is, an entire chapter’s worth of 30 or more pages laid out top to bottom. An example of such a long page is here (last month’s chapter of The Adventures of Ashley Madder). But these long pages can take a long time to load and I’ve never been too sure how readable they are, so I’m considering an alternative mode of publication: the slider. Everything would pop up in one window, and be navigated by arrows. Here is an example of a slider, the comic taken from our sister site Bubbles. If you mouse over it you should see navigation arrows that allow you to page forwards and backwards.

This is a fairly responsive slider in my testing. It resizes images dynamically as you change window size and I believe it should work well with mobile devices as well.

You can see the same comic presented as a long page here.

As I’m not sure which way to go with this new format, I’ve decided to consult the wisdom of crowds and run a poll. Please vote if you have a view. Comments with your reactions and advice are also welcome, as always.

Slider or Long Page?

  1. The slider is a bit too tall for my screen at native resolution (no scaling, etc.). I find scrolling to be nicer for both desktop and mobile.

    • Thanks for this observation. The slider should dynamically resize the image as you resize your browser window, so if you want, you can resize your window to make it narrower, and the slider will make the image less tall. This might or might not be helpful for you.

  2. As long as I can easily go back to find the last page I saw after a few days of not visiting the site.

In other words, no way, how how on the infinite scroll as used by Facebook and many other sites.

    • Thanks for commenting: the daily pages will continue to be published in individual posts as before, so no matter what I decide you should be able to continue to do this. The slider is only under consideration for archive pages.
