And metal garments are more conductive than cloth, so that young lady is definitely in an uncomfortable situation in Margaret Brundage’s illustration of the February 1934 cover of Weird Tales. Hugh Rankin makes an appearance in the interior with an almost ethereally-beautiful illustration for E. Hoffman Price’s story “Tarbis of the Lake.”

I’m guessing she’s the loot

A classic trope well done by Margaret Brundage on the cover of the June 1936 Weird Tales.

In the interior art, Howard S. De Lay (1876-1950) brings the sexy in his illustration of Robert E. Howard’s “Black Canaan,” a story published in the same month as Howard ended his own life.

“And that cursed skull danced with her, rattling and clashing on the sand.”

I don’t think De Lay’s art has been featured here before, but he was a relatively prolific pulp and comics artist. This specialty blog has a short biographical article on him.

Panel 1: CHIBA MOE (“Chiba”), a very attractive young Japanese woman wearing a white one-piece swimsuit that has a logo for the Marine Center above the left breast stands on a diving board in position to make a dive. The swimsuit, while a one-piece, seems designed to emphasize some sex appeal, especially cleavage. Around Chiba’s waist there is a belt with a bag of sorts attached. The diving board extends over the tank containing the creature.

CAPTION (1): At Energexecon Center, a few years later.

Panel 1: Chiba underwater in the tank. She is swimming upright and has taken a fish out of the bag tied to her belt, which she is holding in her hand. One of the creature’s tentacles is extending toward her.

Panel 2: One of the tentacles is wrapped around the fish. The other has grabbed onto one of the shoulder straps of Chiba’s suit and is pulling it down.

Panel 3: The Cub Scouts again, who are staring at this scene gap-mouthed and obviously very interested in what will happen next.

Panel 4: Chiba using her free hand to swat at the tentacles aiming at molesting her. Her shoulder strep is down around her upper arm.

Panel 1: Chiba wagging her finger at the retreating tentacle (indicate both with motion lines).

Comment (2): If the target language for translation is Japanese, the translator need not provide translations of Japanese dialog unless he or she wishes to make suggestions for improvement (the existing Japanese dialog is translated from the “subtitles,” which were what was actually written.

Most ominous Weird Tales story title

Never one to be outdone in the tying-up-pretty-girls department, Margaret Brundage ties one to wheel on the June 1938 cover of Weird Tales to illustrate Seabury Quinn’s “Suicide Chapel.” Virgil Finlay has an interior illustration to the same story which shows off greater emotional intensity.

“She did not swoon, but fought him valiantly.”

Our heroine’s antagonist is meant to be a giant ape. by the way.

Turpentine (1): Well, we had some difficult times there, but it is remarkable how we succeeded in the end.

Perhaps Hugh Rankin liked this sort of thing

Here we have a rare pre-Brundage Weird Tales cover, this one done by Hugh Rankin, a pulp artist we’ve discussed here recently. Our discussion got picked up in a post at BondageBlog, who liked the languid girl chained up in a cave Rankin drew before. Thanks for taking note, Rope Guy!

The interior illustration, also done by Rankin for Seabury Quinn’s story “The House of the Golden Masks,” suggests that perhaps Hugh Rankin liked ’em tied up. (This image is a cross-page composite I put together to try to show the whole thing. I admit it’s not perfect.)
