CAPTION – PSEUDO-NARRATION (1): After a few days’ standoff, Claudia agrees to speak with us, but not with the ship’s crew.

Translation (1): Después de unos días de estancamiento, Claudia acepta hablar con nosotros, pero no con la tripulación del barco.

Panel 2: Closer-in on Claudia.

Claudia (2): The problem is that they’re right. Aside from their two volunteers, I’m the only one they can access in time. There are other women, but they don’t know the right protocols.

A nice kinky whipping

This cover (September 1933) is pretty classic Margaret Brundage: an almost-nude in a kinky situation probably at best remotely related to the contents of the stories beneath the cover. Our distressed damsel has the long flowing locks Brundage was so fond of, possibly because they were so useful in providing a bit of just-barely-there strategic covering so as to keep nosy postal inspectors and local district attorneys at bay.

The interior has a not-bad illustration of Edmond Hamilton’s story “The Horror on the Asteroid,” done by J.M. Wilcox (1895-1958). Also classic stuff, spaceman using spacegun to defend space damsel against space monster.

“He fired without consciously willing to do so.”

Wilcox would achieve a measure of artistic fame within a few months as the first artist to draw Conan the Barbarian, also in the pages of Weird Tales. I shall try to dig that up.

An uncredited and indeed pretty much unnoticed small illustration at the end of the story suggests perhaps things worked out better between monster and damsel than one might have predicted.

Turpentine (1): At this point, the expedition simply cannot succeed without you. There just isn’t anyone else with the right…attributes, and it will be nineteen more years before anyone has another chance.

Translation (1): En este punto, la expedición simplemente no puede tener éxito sin ti. No hay nadie más con los… atributos correctos, y pasarán diecinueve años antes de que alguien tenga otra oportunidad.

Panel 2: Turpentine still facing the door, with his hands up in a pleading gesture.

Turpentine (2): In recognition of what we’re asking of you, the species will be named after you. Gynophagos honeywoodiae. How does that sound?

Comment (2): The Linnean “species name” Gynophagos honeywoodiae should be left in the original Latin, unless it is the custom among professional biologists using your target language to render it otherwise.

Translation (2): En reconocimiento de lo que te estamos pidiendo, la especie llevará tu nombre. Gynophagos honeywoodiae. ¿Qué te parece eso?

Panel 3: Claudia still on her bunk. This is another “surveillance video” panel. In this panel Claudia’s eyes are in an angry squint The precise nature of this squint should be drawn as distinctively as possible and noted (thus as the “Angry Squint”) as it will reappear in another context below.

Claudia (3): Fuck off!

Comment (3): “Fuck off” is a vulgar and rude way in English to tell someone to go away, but one perhaps appropriate under these circumstances.

Translation (3): ¡Vete a la mierda!

Turpentine (5): Think about it.

If pro wrestling had undead nearly-naked women in it, I might watch

I mean, does anyone really wear anything like that and if so, why do they bother? But we shouldn’t really bother asking, as it’s another Margaret Brundage cover on a Weird Tales issue (January 1936) that as one can see by its cover (Paul Ernst, C.L. Moore, Robert E. Howard, August W. Derleth) was a cavalcade of pulp author stars. There is also interior art for the story which (I guess) Brundage did the cover, in this case done by Vincent Napoli (1907-1981), an artist who seems to have gotten his professional start painting WPA murals and found his way into pulp.

Claudia (2): No fucking way, do you understand?

Comment (2): “Fucking” in Claudia’s dialog line here shouldn’t be translated literally. In colloquial English, used in the way Claudia is using it here, it serves purely as an intensifier (generally used by someone who is angry) to stress the point.

Translation (2): De ninguna puta manera, ¿entienden?

Panel 3: Claudia in the midst of storming past Turpentine out of the room. Turpentine has reached out to grab her sleeve, and Claudia has a hand raised to swat it away.

Turpentine (3): Claudia, please.

Translation (3): Claudia, por favor.

Claudia (4): Let go of me!

Translation (4): ¡Suéltame!
