  1. You never know just what they’re teaching the young these days. I’ve gotten blank looks from mentioning things I thought were common knowledge.

    • Tell me about it. Some years ago I was tasked with teaching Hobbes to a bunch of undergraduates at a genuinely elite American university, and finding out that most them had no idea that there had been an English Civil War.

      • There were quite a few English civil wars. The currently-favoured term is “The War of the Three Kingdoms” to make it plain which one – which went a long way beyond England – is meant.

        • Slight correction.

          It’s “The Wars of the Three Kingdoms” plural, as the period it covers comprises six closely-connected wars, not all of them “Civil” nor “English”.
