My original tumblr post was here. This image was researched by Bacchus at ErosBlog as part of the “Δ commission.” The research was originally published at Hedonix as “Δ 032 Sexy Cyborg Frad.” Here is what Bacchus found.

This image is called Frad by Russian artist soft-h on DeviantArt. The artist has an extensive DeviantArt gallery and a recently-moribund LiveJournal blog. Very little additional information about this artist seems to be available on the web.

Tumblr favorite #1861: What would we do without you, Captain Obvious?

captain-obvious

My original tumblr post was here. This image was researched by Bacchus at ErosBlog as part of the “Δ commission.” The research was originally published at Hedonix as “Δ 029 Captain Obvious Is Obvious.” Here is what Bacchus found.

This comic art was created in 2010 by artist Joshua Kemble (whose official site here has quite a large portfolio) for a tee-shirt contest, according to the artist’s BlogSpot blog:

Nathan Stillie (aka Ndstillie) came up with this fantastic concept, and I executed it, figuring it would make a perfect third submission to the Loves Comics Contest, this one being a parody of the super hero genre of comic, featuring captain obvious, and his obvious ways of pointing out… well, the obvious. Obviously. For a long time I’ve believed comics would make awesome shirts, and am glad to participate in the loves competition. Hope you guys like it!

Thank you, Captain Obvious! Shirts and art prints of this artwork remain available.

Tumblr favorite #1863: Bride and pet cat

tumblr_n8kptmzOJp1snah00o1_1280

My original tumblr post was here. This image was researched by Bacchus at ErosBlog as part of the “Δ commission.” The research was originally published at Hedonix as “Δ 031 Bride And Her Cat Gomez. Here is what Bacchus found.

The originating Tumblr post in this image’s chain of Tumblr provenances credits this artwork to El Gato Gomez, and the signature confirms: “Gomez ’14”. El Gato Gomez is an artist from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (according to a blog interview here) whose name comes from the signature cat (Gomez) who appears in many of her works. Her web page is here, and although the gallery there does not include the Bride Of Frankenstein image seen here, there are two clearly-related works in it:

In a post at another blog post she describes her formative influences:

My personal obsession with Mid Century style began very early. As a child I would sit for hours browsing through a small collection of personal treasures my mother had kept from her own childhood. She had a fabulous stash of photo albums, children’s books, and toys that were kept in a closet. I was especially enthralled with a 1960s Disneyland souvenir photo album. The images of Tomorrowland blew my tiny brain into space and the Mary Blair designed Small World dioramas tickled me to pieces. I had never seen anything so enchanting. Visions of the Haunted Mansion and my mother’s recollection of whirling, transparent ghosts and stretching portraits thrilled me completely. My first visit to a Disney park came shortly after Epcot Center opened and I was not disappointed. My most recent trip with my own child only reinforced the awe.

Another great influence was my grandmother whose house lay directly on a graveyard. I visited often on weekends and every Saturday we would watch the classic horror movies on “Creature Feature”. A passion for the macabre in black and white never left me and vintage horror movies and retro TV became part of DNA. Ask my kids — it’s hereditary.

Additional art from this artist may be found on her DeviantArt page.

Tumblr favorite #1862: Aliens abduct Fay Wray

tumblr_nc1xxvnaBk1snge63o1_500

My original tumblr post was here. This image was researched by Bacchus at ErosBlog as part of the “Δ commission.” The research was originally published at Hedonix as Here is what Bacchus found.

This trippy animation was constructed (.gif creator is not known) from an artwork by artist Kelly Keith, who titled it simply Fay 001 on Flickr:

fay-versus-aliens

The reference is to actress Fay Wray, most famous for her starring role in the 1933 movie King Kong. Artist Kelly Keith makes the reference more explicit in this web gallery, where the piece is titled (or perhaps captioned) “The Universe Has the Right to Fay. Acrylic on panel.”)

Visually, the image of Fay is almost certainly collaged-in from a photograph or promotional art from King Kong. Although the precise source image could not be found, the costume and pose are similar to this from the movie, photograph credited to Ernest A. Bachrach:

Artist Kelly Keith was interviewed here, and credits “imagery from children’s books” along with “Eric Fischl, Wayne Thiebaud, Alice Neel, and old science-fiction magazines and paperbacks” for her artistic inspirations.

Tumblr favorite #1860: Bait and distraction

My original tumblr post (with a note “she’s cute when she’s mad!”) was here. This image was researched by Bacchus at ErosBlog as part of the “Δ commission.” The research was originally published at Hedonix as “Δ 028 – Bait And Distraction.” Here is what Bacchus found.

The blog post here displays a still capture of this scene and suggests that the animation is from the September 30, 2010 episode (Accounting For Lawyers) of the NBC television show Community. The actress is Alison Brie.

A similar animation (found here) of what appears to be very nearly the same scene is captioned “I am the smartest one in this whole group and all I’ve been used for is bait and distraction.”

Because of a post at ErosBlog I recognized this image as a page (page 34 as can seen in the scan lower right) from the English-language version of The Survivor by French comic artist Paul Gillon. There were at least three more books of The Survivor after this first one. (#2 #3 #4)

There is a somewhat detailed English-language profile of Paul Gillon here.

Tumblr favorite #1858: Fashionable space helmet

space-girl-fashion

My original tumblr post here. This image was researched by Bacchus at ErosBlog as part of the “Δ commission.” The research was originally published at Hedonix as “Δ 026 – Fashionable Space Helmet. Here is what Bacchus found.

This photograph appeared in L’Officiel de la Couture et de la Mode de Paris, a French fashion magazine that has been published since 1921 and still exists both in print and on the web. What looks to be a complete web archive of the magazine may be found here.

The photograph appeared on page 84 of issue number 573-574 in 1969. A single word (perhaps Guégan) appears upper left, potentially both a name and a photographer credit.

In 2012 a design blog posted a thumbnail crop of this image as part of a photomosiac titled Space Mod: A Voyage Into 60s Intergalactic Fashion. The mosaic includes numerous similar fashion images evoking whimsical space clothing and gear.

The issue of L’Officiel where this photo appeared is quite remarkably space-happy for a fashion magazine, even in 1969, featuring as it does transparent bubbles invoking space helmets on at least half a dozen pages, plus the cover, which is shown here:

Tumblr favorite #1857: Do me with your ray gun!

space-sluts

My original tumblr post here. This image was researched by Bacchus at ErosBlog as part of the “Δ commission.” The research was originally published at Hedonix as “Δ 025 – ‘Do me with your phallic ray-gun!’.” Here is what Bacchus found.

This image is striking in the impracticality of the space attire on display, even in a pulp art genre that is almost defined by space suits made impractical by the need to be sexy. An above-the-knee spacesuit seems impractical enough to be sure, but perhaps not so impractical as those rocket nose cones masquerading as bra cups?

Of course, no real publication in the true pulp era would have used the word “sluts” on a cover, which is our first clue that this is a tongue-in-cheek interpretation of pulp memes by a modern artist. Indeed, this image can be found at Thumbtack Press, identified as Space Sluts by Candykiller.

The artist Candykiller in turn is identified thusly:

Candykiller is a brand created by Scottish artist Brian Taylor. Brian started out as a graphic designer and illustrator in the design and advertising industry, working in various studios around Scotland. He now works from his home studio in Dundee.

Most of his work is influenced by imagery from his childhood. A collection of illustrations, design ideas, and assorted visual ramblings, inspired by cheap novelties, vintage cartoons, pop art, trading cards and underground comix, to name a few of the wonders that sparked his imagination as a child. Candykiller projects range from books, toys, original art and limited edition prints.

Artist Brian Taylor maintains (or at least maintained) a Google+ presence here.

Q [from Faustus]: Almost certainly young Dr. Herbert West, but who drew it?

A [from Bacchus]: The earliest source in this image’s current Tumblr chain of provenances is this post at Uncanny And Slightly Spooky. The tags found there include #herbert west, #re-animator, and #jeffrey combs, confirming that this is indeed an image of Dr. Herbert West, the character played by Jeffrey Combs in the 1985 sci-fi horror comedy Re-Animator. According to Wikipedia, Re-Animator was a film adaptation of a 1922 H.P. Lovecraft short story called Herbert West — Reanimator.

Although the artwork as found at Uncanny And Slightly Spooky appears unsigned, additional tags at that source include #i recently discovered jeffrey combs films, #and now i’m completely hooked, #expect lots of nerdy horror boy fanart in the near future, and #fanart. Taken together, these tags strongly suggest that the artist is the operator of that Tumblr blog. A quick look starting at the front page currently shows additional work in the same style with tags that are clearly by the artist.

The Tumblr itself offers just a few clues to the artist’s identity, but they are sufficient. The url prefix is “eckses” and a theme element says “Maltese. Does art stuff.” There’s a DeviantArt artist called eckses whose art appears similar and whose profile identifies him as from Malta. It appears near-certain that “eckses” is the artist who created this image.

Tumblr favorite #1855: Seven tube girls

Original post here. This image was researched by Bacchus at ErosBlog as part of the “Δ commission.” The research was originally published at Hedonix as Here is what Bacchus found.

This artwork is cropped from a screenshot from the 1992 Japanese computer role-playing game Dragon Pink: The Zero Castle which ran on the PC-98 platform:

The game was based on Dragon Pink, a 1990 erotic manga by Itoyoko that was later made into a three-part erotic anime series. A central character (not shown) was a cat-girl slave named Pink.
