I originally blogged this in a post “Lights, Camera, Peril” at Infernal Wonders, but that post lacked much in the way of provenance. A little subsequence Internet research shows that the source of the illustration is the April 1936 cover of Saucy Movie Tales by the prolific American pulp artist Norman Saunders (1907-1989). This appears to be the unredacted cover:

Some recent Internet Archive contributions

I am pleased to announce that I have recently been able to contribute more work to the Internet Archive. First off, some 90+ images of mad science art that I’ve commissioned over the years are now available in both ZIP and CBZ archives downloadable from the Archive. Volume I contains some 50 images:

vol1-screenshot

Click on the image or here to get to the download page. Volume II contains 42 images:

vol2-screenshot

Click on the image or here for the download page. Note that many of these archival images are available in sizes and resolutions hitherto not published. On each download page there’s a little image flipbook so you can see what’s available in each package.

In addition to these new archives, We Must Boost the Signal is now available as a high-resolution PDF and in an on-screen reader.

I’ll end with a plea, and not on behalf of myself. There is a huge wealth of wonderful things in the Internet Archive, an undertaking which preserves vast amounts of digital culture that millions of people have worked to create and which might otherwise disappear or become inacessible. I find it to be one of the most inspired works of philanthropy of our age. So if you can rustle up some spare scratch, I urge you to consider a donation to their work.

Pulp Art recreations II: Fiend’s Feast

Introduction

An adaptation of a classic pulp cover by prolific Erotic Mad Science contributor Niceman. Central Park at night in the 1980s was sort of like this (I think).

Pulp Art recreations I: Werewolf Peril

Introduction

We’ll be resuming publication of the Tales of Gnosis College in July, but in the meantime we have something special for you running on a daily basis: pulp art recreations.

What are pulp art recreations? While I have a more elaborate explanation on the artists’ commission page, the basic idea is that we’re delving into the past of old pulp and comics covers and looking for relevant art for modern artists to…sex up a bit. Or rather, a bit more, given that these covers were pretty racy to begin with. In this sequence of posts we’ll be including the new art and then the source.

Our first entry is by Netherlands artist Frans Mensink.

Niceman’s We Must Boost the Signal Art

Longtime readers of this site should have fond memories of talented CG artist Niceman, who has done so much outstanding work for this site in the past. I recently had the pleasure of turning him loose with the right to pick his own commission from the script of We Must Boost the Signal, and he fastened on a particular scene which takes place at around Page 13. Faith Quek, a hard-working single professional woman comes home to takes a shower to relax after a rough day at the office. The good news for Faith is that it will be her last hard day at the office.

niceman.faith-near

The not-so-good news can be seen when we draw back our focus. Faith’s shower is being invaded by a mysterious and, as it will turn out, rather hungry sentient slime…

niceman.faith-far

What will poor Faith’s ultimate fate be? Stay tuned.
