Strictly speaking, Ashley isn’t dead, so much as she is suspended in her current form. There’s a theoretical possibility that someone with the right technology could restore her to fleshy life. Though as it happens, she manages to reach at least a century into the future (when she’s present at a concert with the “smart cello” that contains the uploaded personality of Tanya Yip (see Volume 8, Number 8). Still, we shouldn’t give up hope for her!
Her current status is a consequence of the interaction between the distillate and Ashley’s own idiosyncratic psychology. Be careful what you wish for!
There’s an additional petrification story within the Tales that takes place Volume VI, reaching its climax (if that is the right word) here. This story inspired Drake at Medusariffic to contribute a pednant story “A Dreadful Accident.”
